my Starbucks barista experience

Working at Starbucks - was one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. No regrets, indeed.

One afternoon, I checked my phone and I realized that I'd gotten two missed-calls from an unknown number. I didn't call back immediately because I was thinking that if it's really important they would call me back. lol but anyway, I asked my mom to call the number back as I wasn't able to use my phone at the moment (I was working at another restaurant). To my surprise, it was a call from Starbucks! They asked me to go for an interview. omg I couldn't describe the feeling I had when I got the news. I was surprised and yet, excited! Later on, I made an appointment with the manager for the interview.

Needless to say, I was really nervous to get ready for the interview. I didn't know what to prepare for it. Anyhow I googled about Starbucks and found something really interesting and useful for the interview. There were people giving advice on the interviews as a Starbucks barista since they had been through that. There's one common thing from each advice, you don't really have to get ready with anything. Because the questions they're gonna ask are mostly about common sense and some real life situations. What they wanted from the interviewees was the way they handle the situations. The manager who interviewed me, her name was Sarah. She didn't really look friendly at first because she rarely smiled. But after a few questions she did and she told me not to be nervous. I guess the nervousness was kinda obvious on my face, wasn't it? Anyway the interview lasted for almost an hour. So many questions had been asked! But well, I did answer all of them very honestly. I think I did well hmm. The only question that I was very sure they would ask was, "why do you want to work in Starbucks, as a barista?" and my answer was, "because I want to know more about Starbucks. I want to know how every single drink is made here as I'm one loyal Starbucks customer myself." I wasn't sure if my answer was convincing enough but that was the sincerest answer I could give. That's the true reason why I wanted to work in Starbucks.

After the interview, Sarah asked me to come to the store next week for the "first impression" session. I had no idea about what's gonna happen, I thought that it was something like ice-breaking. But, it wasn't. I was given an envelope with some books in it. Barista learning journals, the green apron book etc. Sarah explained to me about the history of Starbucks and the rules and regulations applied for a barista. I must say, the book was thick with a few thousands of words. Anyway, I read through all of them when I got home though.

20 February was my very first day to put on the uniform - a black tee, a pair of black long khakis, black socks, black shoes, black cap and lastly, the green apron. Besides, we were not allowed to put on any accessories such as watches, earrings, bracelets and necklaces. On the first day, I wasn't able to make drinks yet. This was understandable. I was asked to do sliding - walking around the cafe to clean the tables. On a side note, I was so happy that my friends came to visit me on my first day! Thank you karyee and ginnie! :D I wanted to make drinks so badly but well I kept reminding myself to be patient as the day would surely come really soon.

Green Tea Latte & Green Tea Cream - my favourites!

Before I could really make drinks, I had to study. And by study I mean I had to memorize the markings for each drink and the recipes of making the beverages. I wrote down all the notes in my barista learning journal and studied them after work. And in just two weeks, I was able to make all the cold beverages already! I was so happy hehe most of my colleagues there addressed me as a fast-learner. But in fact, I was not. I was just ... erm maybe ... a little bit hardworking. Anyway, later on, after the bar class, I got to make hot beverages. The espresso machine "La Marzocco" was an interesting machine. I was so glad that our machine wasn't the same as the ones in most of the other stores in Malaysia. This machine we had was more to a manual kind of machine. We had to pull the espresso shots and stamp the powder manually. Unlike the new espresso machine, the coffee made by our machine tasted better according to our customers. Learning about making beverages with the espresso machine was kind of a new skill to me. Besides that, I got to learn to make latte art! And soon I fell in love with it. I always enjoyed making latte because I wanted to make the art even though I didn't succeed every time. But when I did, I would be soooo happy and my day would be made. There were customers whom saw my art and smiled, and after all that's what mattered the most. :)

Customer service - one thing that is strongly emphasized in the f&b (food and beverage) industry. I'm glad I learned a lot about it. Serving customers wasn't just about the amount of money we received, it was all about making someone's day better. We shouldn't prioritize our tasks over customers' needs. Customers always come first in this industry. We're not given a chance to complain about our customers no matter how bad or rude they are. Instead, we must fulfill their requests and try our best to make it as good as we can. I had to admit that most of the customers there were nice and friendly. But of course, there was also some who weren't that nice. I could actually recognize the regular customers there and address them by name once they walked into the store. This was an achievement to me. Some customers really appreciated it when I could remember their names by writing them down on the cups without asking them. They were even happier when we could remember their drinks. (some customers did order the same beverage every single time they visited the store) After some time, I finally understood what customer service was really about. I realized that my mood got lifted up after talking to the customers or just by smiling at them. Their smiles and greetings made my day. Never think customers as a disturbance. This was one of the never's in the list for a Starbucks barista. Whenever I had a bad day or didn't feel like smiling, I would think in another perspective - do I want to be treated this way if I was a customer? - NO. So I did what I was supposed to.

Alright, now let's talk about the colleagues I met there. If I was allowed to use only a word to describe them it would definitely be AWESOME. They were beyond awesome, in fact. They were the best colleagues I could ever ask for. Friendly, helpful, hardworking, cheerful ... they were definitely a bunch of nice people you could make friends with. I was new but they didn't treat me differently. In fact, they taught me a lot. They would find an absolute answer to all of my questions every time. Moreover, they never failed to make me laugh. Working time wasn't boring at all with them around. I really enjoyed working there a lot. To be honest, every single time somebody asked me about my job, I would say it's fun and enjoyable. I always give positive comments about it. Well, they were true ... they were spoken from the bottom of my heart.

I feel so lucky ... so lucky to have an opportunity to be one of the partners in Starbucks. Although I didn't work for a long time (only 5 months), it was definitely something that I will never ever forget. I did work in an office once after graduating from Form 5, and I knew it wasn't something I wanted to do again. So, this time I insisted to work in f&b as I knew it would definitely be very interesting and challenging. I was right. I had no regrets at all. I'm so proud to say that I was once a Starbucks barista. I will surely recommend my friends and family members to work as a barista whenever they have long holidays. I was very benefited working there as I learned a lot and I can say, I grew up a lot. I realized that I have changed, changed for good, of course. I'm able to talk to strangers now, even though it's the first time we meet. Like, I'm not that shy to voice out my opinions anymore. I learn to understand and respect others more. Plus, I know how to cooperate with others better. If I could turn back time, I would undoubtedly work as a Starbucks barista again.

Eighteen.

Hello! I'm finally updating my blog about my birthday, after a week. LOL Yea, for those who didnt know, my 18th birthday was on the 20th of April. Yeahhh, I AM NOW EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD. wooohoooo.

All I can say is it was awesomeeee max. I felt blessed and loved. :)

They were planning to give me a surprise and it was a success, 'cause I really did not expect that, not even a tiny bit of it. I seriously thought they're gonna bring me to a restaurant as what ginnie has told me. lol. I fell for it. As seen in the photo above, I was blind-folded once I got into ginnie's car. I was so nervous, wondering what was gonna happen next. Later on, ginnie's mom dropped us at a place which I didn't know where it is at first. I held ginnie's hand and kept asking her where we are actually heading to.

"Nie, where is this place?"

"This is a very very grand restaurant... see, we are such good friends right. They have a fountain..."

(sound of basketball hitting the ground)

"And a basketball court as well?! HUH??"

"HAHAHA yala this restaurant is really huge and grand!!"

"I'M SO GONNA HIT YOU LATER, GINNIE GAN!"

XD

And we walked for a really long distance (it was undeniably long to me as I was blind-folded and I had to watch every step I took just to ensure my "safety". haha) until she asked me to let go of her hand. I didnt wanna do so, thinking that something not good might happen if I did. So I GRABBED her hand very tightly. Finally, I took that blind-folding thing off and OMGGG I saw a group of people standing right in front of me! I was like omg seriously?! I couldn't believe that they brought me to brem park and invited so many of them to celebrate my birthday! awwww.

I was SURPRISED, indeed. Totally didn't expect that, like I said. And my birthday cake was a cheese cake again! from secret recipe again! haha but this time, it's raspberry flavoured. I made a wish and blew off those 9 candles. My hands were shaking when I was cutting the cake. omg so unexpected.

I knew this would come. When wencai told me that she's leaving and asked me to accompany her to the guard house, I sensed something. Few moments later, karyee and regina approached us. Ohno, not good. haha I was like, "nahh, you wanna push me into the pool is it? Not gonna happen." But anyhow, at last, I still ended up being in the pool and getting my whole body wet. But I wasn't alone, karyee and vivian got into the pool too. Vivian was so funny, she insisted to get into it by HERSELF. hahaha And btw, karyee was pushed by wenjie into the pool and I clapped my hands. XD

However, later on, THAT problem arose again! yes, the security's problem. wth. He told us that the residents complaint about us and we gotta leave that place as we didn't pay for the fees of booking that pool side area. ahhh everyone's mood was gone.

Plan B - Pitstop. We ordered drinks and started playing the games they supplied there. Vivian and wencai didn't join us though. We played board games, stack-up game (? dont know what that game is called) etc. We even played angry birds game as well. LMAO. It was a great chilling time. Although there are some problems, it still turned out to be an enjoyable day. I LOVE IT AND I TRULY APPRECIATE IT.

Thanks for the planning my bffs! You girls succeeded cause I was really surprised. :D Thanks for the dress code - pink! haha. Thanks for the sweet girls and guys who showed up. Shout out to KarYee, Ginnie, Vivian, WenCai, BiQing, Chris, KaiXin, Regina, XiangTing, SinLing, WeyWenn, JiaQian, WenJie, ZhaoXuan, Clement, ChanPheng, Eric, WingMing, ChangChong and ZheHui! Perfect ending.

WE ARE OFFICIALLY RETIRED!

After contributing for 5 years, our prefect-life has finally come to an end. We're free from all the duties! However, on the other hand, we might not be able to spend time together like how we did in the past. No more meetings. No more having breakfast in the canteen together. :( We are like a big family ... and I'm proud and glad to be one of the members. Everyone in the prefectorial board is so nice! It's a great pleasure to meet such awesome people like them in my life. I hope we can still keep in touch. :')

The annual reception was a blast! It was held in the Gardens Hotel. Undeniably, I always have fun whenever my ji mui are around. :D Everyone was so stunning and we took a lot a lot of pictures. Of course, we enjoyed ourselves very much. The form 4's did a great job in organizing the event. It was well-planned. :)

Retiring from being a prefect also indicates that we're gonna leave the school SO SOON. :( I really wish that that day would never come. But yeah, impossible. *sigh* I swear, I will miss all these people like seriously! And also other form 5's ... I'm gonna keep the words until the day we graduate. No matter what, just CHERISH THE MOMENT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW, EVERY DAY AND EVERY SECOND ♥

And by the way ...

POONKARYEE, I ♥ THIS! Thank youuuuu! :D

Exhibition Day '11

It was my final exhibition day in my entire high school life. I thought we could enjoy the day like how we did last year, but then everything was totally different. No more food selling, no more exciting games and no more haunted house/room. -,- I guess all the sentosarians know what makes it change so much. So, needless to say, this year's exhibition day was freaking boring. I didnt really visit every club this year. Moreover, only 15-20 clubs were involved. sighh.

*Let's skip the 'larian serentak'

Anyway, my club, Kelab Butik dan Hidangan did a great job. I'm proud of all my members seriously. :D and, thank you so much to Vivian Chong for helping me to clean the room up today. P.S. The sandwich she made was really nice. happy? hahaha ;p

I did attend the mini concert held by the Music Club. Performances were superb and impressive! They were really good in singing and playing musical instruments. :)

After cleaning up everything, we went to block H for Arthur's birthday celebration. He was surprised. lol I think he's happy and satisfied today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY for the third-or-dont-know-how-many-times. XD The cake made by Jessica was so delicious that we thought she bought it instead of baking it by herself. (Teach me arrh next time! :p)

Alright, at 12.30pm, walked to esso with karyee, wencai and vivian. We're waiting for ginnie's arrival. Chatted with jijing and clement in the meanwhile. We planned to go to paparich to have lunch together. Ginnie's mom fetched us there. Too bad chris had class she couldnt join us. :( Our next stop was Snowflakes. This time, there's only karyee, ginnie and I. That was ky's first time being there. lol We crapped a lot and even shared some secrets. Shared many 'siasui' things as well. HAHA.

The day was ... er.. tiring. I think I ran around the school for more than five times today. Phew, but finally the exhibition day is overrr! Need not worry about my club anymore. Sudah boleh bersara-lah. haha

P.S. OMG Saw somebody so many times today. :$ Even karyee and wencai agree with me .. er-hem SCISSORS XD

K gotta take a nap now. Ciao!

Paid off.

OHHH MY BLOG IS SO DEAD. LOL

Okay, update update.

Sports day was just over. It's my final year to attend sports day and I have no regrets! I joined yellow house's marching team and guess what, we got the second place! WHOA Really really satisfied :D Thanks to all the members for making it real! Thanks for turning up in all the trainings. Although we did some mistakes on that day, we still managed to gain applause from the spectators. That's more than enough! teehee. Besides, yellow house's cheerleaders won the first place!! We were so happy for them, seriously. ;) And overall, yellow house won the second place. Proud of YELLOW HOUSE man! :DD

One thing I must not forget to mention is, the scouts and athletes were so impressive! *.* Agreed by so many of them. Congratulations to scouts for getting the first place in marching :D girls guide did a great job too! The day was superbbbbb.

Yeahh, finally it ended. Need not stay back for trainings anymore and I can now concentrate on my studies. SPM! *stressful*

P.S. Now I'm looking for people to attend Cheer '11 with meeeee! (waiting for some replies)

Alright. I think that's all. Gonna update again soon. :)

Sometimes you try your hardest but things just don't work out the way you want them to. THIS IS LIFE.

Oh by the way, the voting thingy is finally over. My cousin gets to enter the final (top 6)! Thanks for every single vote. Now I realize there're so many kind-hearted people around me. Some of them never even talked to me before and they're willing to help out. Aww. A thousand thanks man. ;) I think around 100 votes are from my friends. You guys are totally awesome. x

Went to Chatime at Sunway Pyramid yesterday. The bubble tea was really really nice. They even have so many choices of flavours and toppings. Just RM6.90 for a cup. Greatly recommended!

I'm officially 17!

I had a great birthday this year! Despite the surprise on last Saturday, today is also a day full of surprises! This is a dream-come-true as all I wanted for this year birthday is SURPRISE! I'm so thankful for everything. Every single thing, seriously. :D

At 12am. Actually I had already slept. But somehow, I managed to be awake at 1150pm. Lol! Vivian was the first one to call me, Ginnie was next and then KarYee. Thanks for all the messages! There's one of them I love the most. Try guessing? haha!

Okay ... Time for school! The first who wished me was jiansheng. I met him and regina at the staircase. So, regina was the next one. LOL I was in a very good mood in the morning. Felt like something was awaiting to happen. haha thought too much!

The first surprise was given by karyee. In the morning, she told me that she couldnt finish the card on time and she might be giving it to me on the next day. I was like, "Ohh. It's okay. :) Take your time!" But then ... aiya, I was so emotional la! Lol

♥ ♥ ♥

Eventually, she gave two cards and a piece of cake to me in front of my class! Thank you, KARYEE ! The cards are nice and I know you did a lot of hard work. Loveeeee! And, thanks 5A12-ers for the birthday song! You guys made it look so grand by standing up while singing the song. Awww! Ohya .. a big thanks to the BIRO RAMBUT MEMBERS for singing me the birthday song TWICE! That's so sweet of y'all. haha Next, thanks, BIQING YENTHENG WENJIE VINCENT for the birthday gifts! I appreciate all of them. :) I thought that's all the gifts I was gonna receive. BUT, after school, when I got home, there's another (the second) surprise!! Thank you, MUNWEI ! No doubt, I love your gifts. ;) (And I love the way you call me 'Imn Imn' :D) After that, went to kasturi for tuition. Thanks LIJIEN MAYYAN SIOBITA ANUSSHA KLAUDIA BALA for wishing me a happy birthday! :) :) Later on, I received another present. It's from JONATHAN! Thank you so much for the JustinBieber's First Step 2 Forever : My Story book!! Next, thank you GINNIE for the JB's scrapebook. I literally screamed when I saw it! Thank you, VIVIAN for accompanying me to the JB's concert! I did make a right choice! haha Thank you KOKJUN for that special dedication picture on facebook!! Last but not least, I want to thank my PARENTS for the concert ticket!! :D Thanks for every single wish and greeting! I appreciate every one of them!!! Most of the wishes are asking me to stay happy and smile always. Alright .. I promise, I'll keep that big smile on my face. Always. ^^ Anyway, the ecstasy was beyond words can tell ♥ I feel blissful!

Arigato!

Don't doubt it. They're mentioning me. haha

16th of April, Saturday. Planned to go for an outing with my jimui. I reached there at 1130 as karyee said she was alone. Went to F.O.S. with her and bought two singlets. One was purple and another one was pink. Bought the purple one for JB's concert and bought another one because it'd be much cheaper. XD Later on, met up with ginnie and had our lunch at Zen. We ordered 3 drinks and I shared a chocolate brownies with Ginnie. I'm really obsessed with chocolate lately. Lol And then, vivian joined us. Took a lot of pictures there. I guess even the uncle at the next table couldn't withstand us, the camwhore freaks! haha Next, MOVIE TIME! I love 'Never Say Never' so much! Take a chance to watch it and you'll know why I'm so crazy about him. ;) I know you're gonna think I was insane or I was totally out of my mind. But seriously, I did cry. The part when he tweeted his fans about his health condition. Awwww :'( Wait. Vivian did cry too. Nahh, I was not the only one!

Alright .. back to reality!

Before the movie ended, karyee and vivian left first. Karyee said she wanted to buy a cake for her sister. (now I know why she said so. Lol) Then, after the movie, I left the cinema with ginnie. I was so puzzled 'cause she was like leading me hanging around as if she's trying to waste time. (now I know why as well) She even brought me to Toys 'R Us just to take some pictures. Now when I recall it back, that's funny. haha

Finally, she brought me to Secret Recipe. Goshh, I could see kokjun when I was at the escalator! I looked at ginnie and spoke in English, somehow. "Damn. What're you guys doing?!" She just looked at me without answering. Lol I rushed over there and ... I stopped. Trying to escape but ginnie pulled me back. It's all because I saw him, munwei. haha OMG I was pleasantly surprised! Of course, I saw brian and vincent as well. :)

Nice one. Thanks, kokjun. ;)

Thanks for coming, guys! Thanks for attending when you're still sick! And thanks my jimui for planning this! That oreo cheesecake ... Niceee! :D (thanks karyee! I said I want an oreo cake and you really got me one!!)

THANK YOU for everything ♥

And lastly ...

I love this picture! Thank you, brian. ;)

Failure.

“i always waste my time waiting for something that may never happen”.

I always waste my time waiting for something that may never happen.

I do everything with hope. But why? It always ends up with disappoinment? Most of the things do not always fulfill my expectation. Damn. SeeSweeImn, stop dreaming about silly things! They are so not gonna happen. I realize something - whatever I've imagined will never happen. wth? OH WAIT.. There's an exception. :D

My mood was really down for the whole day. Everything seemed to be going really wrong. There're many reasons for that. Hmm. But then, these people lightened my mood up!

On Facebook : Vivian and KarYee

On MSN : KarYee . WenCai . SinLing . Joseph . Junior . Storm . YuanYang .

Thank You So Much !

My mood was like shooting up from the hell to the heaven. LOL! Especially when chatting in a group convo with wencai and joe. ;)

P/S : Sinling is also a fan of Taylor Swift's ! Yeepiee :D

Cherishable.

Okay I'm back now to update about the outing with my jimui yesterday! It was a so-called Single Ladies' gathering. Karyee said it's held to celebrate the beginning of my single life. LOL! But undoubtedly, I enjoyed very much. Although the period we spent together was not really long, we still had a lotsa fun. Karyee, wencai and chris were so perasan. Unlike me and vivian ! haha (Vivian will be perasan when she sees this. xD)

We chatted alot.. It was seriously relieving after I'd expressed everything. They gave me a lot of supports and concerns as well. ♥

And, one more thing, we ate quite alot. So many dishes! But we got one additional free-of-charged dish as the waiter made a mistake on our orders. Anyway, the food was nice.

Chris also suggested a pass-around thingy which is only will be passed around between 5 of us. It's some sort like a diary. That was a great idea! Hope that it can really be made out.

Thanks chris's mom for fetching me there! :D
